Resolution of Solidarity with the First Nations People of Australia

The following resolution of solidarity was adopted unanimously by Annerley Labor on 7 November 2023:

In 2017, the Uluru Statement from the Heart generously invited all Australians to walk together with our First Nations people for a better future by addressing the long-standing issue of Indigenous disadvantage that continues to blight our nation.

The first step in this walk was the 2023 referendum which sought to recognise over 65,000 years of continuous culture and establish a First Nations Voice in our Constitution. Unfortunately, throughout the referendum campaign, misinformation and disinformation about the purpose and scope of the Voice proliferated across social and traditional media, with little accountability or recourse. Regrettably, the result did not match the aspirations and hope of millions of Australians who desired a better future for our First Nations people.

Accordingly, Annerley Labor acknowledges and shares the deep sorrow and grief felt by many First Nations People in the wake of the Voice to Parliament referendum result.

In addition, we firmly express our solidarity with First Nations People and our resolve to continue in our walk with them.

We also affirm that the referendum result does not extinguish the vast history, or the ancestral ties to land, culture and traditions, of this nation’s First Nation’s People. Regardless, Annerley Labor will:
• continue work in partnership with First Nations communities, and others, to fight for justice, equality and a more inclusive and diverse Australia.
• support Australia’s First Nations people in their struggle for self-determination, recognition, Voice, Truth-telling and fair Treaties.
• strongly advocate for more effective action to close the gaps in healthcare, education and housing, and create a more equal future for everyone.
• continue to advocate for the adoption of truth in political advertising laws.
